From the previews, it looked like Forky was the focus of Toy Story 4. We see Woody’s devotion to his kid by trying to help her at school. I felt for him and watched Woody try to handle the fact he wasn’t wanted much anymore. Woody is also not one of Bonnie’s favorite toys. Woody is not the leader in Bonnie’s room and that is fine. Of course, Woody stays with Andy but we knew this since this is prequel info.Ī bit later we are in Bonnie’s room. Woody made a life-altering decision to stay even though Bo was like “toys” always get lost. We already knew Bo Peep left, and now we know why. We also get a glimpse of the relationship between Woody and Bo Peep. They were risking their lives to save RC from being swept away in the storm. The first scene shows the toys and the depths of the friendship. Toy Story 4 takes us back to bring us forward. A spork? Bo Peep is back? Then I remembered how good Pixar is good at storytelling and with each preview I was a little more excited to see the movie. How can Pixar even come close to what I thought was a perfect ending to the Toy Story legacy? I saw the previews and still was not too impressed. Then we get the Toy Story 4 announcement. Pixar said unless they had a stellar storyline then there would not be a Toy Story 4. Unlike Disney, who jumps at the chance to make a sequel, Pixar has very few of them and they are usually YEARS apart from the original. We though the story was over.Įven Pixar thought the story was over. It was almost like we were parting with a childhood friend. Not only was our childhood gone in the time span between movies 1 and 3 but also that of a character we have loved and understood. I think for most of us, especially those with kids it was sad because Andy grew up. In Toy Story 3, everyone had lumps in their throats and tears rolling down their cheeks as Andy handed his toys over to Bonnie. Woody learns appreciation for his relationship not only with Andy but with the rest of the Toy Story gang. Jessie and The Prospector show Woody different views about the world. He meets new friends and learns that life is not all that he thought it was going to be. He discovers his past and tries to figure how that is going to meld that with his current life. In Toy Story 2, Woody faces a whole new set of problems. At the end of Toy Story Woody and Buzz were best friends, the gang was together and happy. While Pixar did a great job of showing the bond between a toy and a child, they did an amazing job showing the bonds formed between the toys.

We understood that relationship, we really didn’t need a movie about that.

For me, it was my Pammy Cabbage Patch doll. Maybe we thought back to a special toy from our own childhood. Stay tuned for more coverage from CinemaCon 2019 and be sure to keep an eye on what we know about the upcoming animated Pixar flick. We identified with Andy’s love for his toys. When I realized what they were going for, I realized, 'Oh, this is a moment in history.'

But I didn't want to see them and I wanted to pretend they couldn't see me. When I went in for my last day of recording, I wanted to have my back to them, because usually you're facing him so you can look right up and you can talk about it. The way you record Toy Story, you're in a room with the team that has created it.

Plus Tom Hanks has already said he had an emotional last day filming this sucker, and even didn’t want to face the creative team as he finished up his recording. The other movies in the franchise leave me blubbering every. Ultimately, we know Toy Story 4 is going to get emotional. Andy’s been a part of every movie and he’s woven into Woody’s fibers of being, even if Woody now has Bonnie written on his shoe. Seeing Andy again – even though I knew it was going to happen – capably tied the movie to its roots. I’m not always fond of flashbacks, but in this case, it seems to have worked. Of course, while it’s nice to know why Bo Peep and Woody were separated and when exactly in the timeline it happened, the really notable moment may simply be seeing Woody back in Andy’s world. She just wasn’t really a major component in the Toy Story narrative for the last couple of movies, but this first look capably presents a good reason behind why Bo Peep disappeared and the trailer reintroduces her as a stronger and wiser character.īut now she’s back in a big way in Toy Story 4. From Pixar's point of view, we don’t know exactly why Bo Peep was written out of Toy Story 3 or why she only popped up briefly in Toy Story 2.
